10th Graders! Post Poems Here!

Click on the link that says "comments" below. Write your poems into the box and include your name. Select "name/url" for the user. Type your first and last name.

Poetry Comparison Essay Directions:

• Using the poem you found and wrote down in the library along with another poem we’ve read, your job is to write a 4 paragraph essay describing how the writers in each poem use similar literary elements (repetition, metaphors, etc.) and how those elements effect the meaning of the poem.
• Include a thesis statement and evidence from the poems to demonstrate your point. Example: In “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” by Robert Frost and “Christopher Lomax 60,” by Walter Dean Myers, each poet uses natural imagery, repetition, and extended metaphor to show how painful and short-lived the world can be.
• Each body paragraph should quote lines from the poem that shows this literary element.
You will turn in your notebook at the end of class on Thursday. I will be looking for your poetry log, your organization, and your written final. This work must be done in class. Not using class time will result in a decreased grade

I'm from lego's and building cars
I'm from war games and being soaked
From soccer balls being kicked into goals

I'm from moving from state to state
From watching my dad leaving to return again

Watching as the twin towers fall
    From listening to adults arguing
and watching in a moment of silence

  5. Socially Broken

    Isolation, it steals
    the importance of love.
    The scent of a bloodstained
    ocean of dried tears. It
    blinds emotion with the
    taste of frozen blood on
    frostbitten cheeks. The dark
    depression engulfs the
    room with numbness. As the
    python surrounds the
the bird with pressure and takes
    it's life. Attempting to
find the fire gets old. As
    Isolation slowly
    and coldly takes it's hold.

  7. Fear

    The smoke that bellowed from
    The burning rubber. The
    Pain of a pulled muscle.
    The taste of viniger
On dryed up lips. Loose prey
    Running from a wolf. The
    Endless black. Death knocking
    On sombodys bright door.

When i was a baby i was cute as a button
until my brother dropped me on my head.
When i was a baby my bigger brother bought
me a binky which i loved.
When i was a baby i ate applesauce.
When i was a baby i could care less.

When i was a baby i thought pigs could fly.
When i was a baby i crawled around my house.
When i was a baby i slept for hours.
When i was a baby i played till i couldnt play any more.
When i was a baby i drank out of a bottle.
When i was a baby i loved everyone.

That was when then this now
no more binkys no more bottles
no more crawling but still more playing
playing with toys that go Tick Tick Boom
no more sleeping in bed more like reading in bed, books and magazines
characters with huge mudcles and big hair

  10. Sit up straight, dont talk
    and dont sleep.
Get up early but also get
a lot of sleep. Thats the trick.
Dont get in fights. An eye
for an eye makes the whole world blind.
Ask for help, dont be shy
tell the truth, please dont lie.
    Be respectful and responsible
be nice, but stand up for yourself
and most importantly do your work
    NO EXCUSES!

    it's head. Eyes open
    wide. It's distinct motives
    have died. Dried rivers
    have come in vein. Broken
    promises worth the pain.
Depressions eye burned out the day.
Depressions lies have come out to play.
For the second depression had entered

had been hit by a car.

Plop the gummy bears cried out as they fell into the water bowl

Grab the handle bars and hold on
Your feet move in a circular motion
You bounce up and down on the trail
STOP! OR YOU ARE GOING TO HIT THE TREE!
    BOOM! BANG! CRACK!
Head over heels you wake up you feel no pain

Smoking is not the way to go, you gotta focus on your grades and how you take care of yourself
These friends of yours aren't fun and funny
Step one to success is to drop the cigarette down to the ground
Step two is to get your grades up because that's the engine to your car of success your family doesn't want anything less
    How to have success

    Happiness

It smells like the new smell of clothes

It tastes like the first bite of a hamburger
It looks like a big smile
It looks like a lion after it's done hunting
It's color is blue like the thirst of water.

    Two Voice Poem

    Why are you so nice?
    Why are you so mean?

I treat people the way i want to be treated.
So what do you do if they talk behind your back?

    I ignore it walk away.
Really? that's not me, I would just punch them in the face.

That ain't the right thing to do.
So? someone needs to do it.

You need to control yourself and watch your anger.

  45. Erin Murphy Poems

    Where I’m From
I’m from Lincoln Logs and Transformers,
    From mud and my dogs.
I’m from soccer games and softball,
    And from basketball courts.
I’m from Backstreet Boys and Aaron Carter,
    3 Musketeers with Grammy.
I’m from the beach and ice cream
And my hands that were clammy.
I’m from Power Rangers and SpongeBob,
    Care Bears and Dragon Tales.
I’m from planes flying through buildings,
    Not knowing how bad.
    I’m from a divided family
And a 6th grade in hell.
    Burying 2 loved ones,
    Saying goodbye to them both.
I’m from holding my sister and telling her
    “It’ll be okay”.
    I’m from being a Daddy’s girl,
    And arguing with my mom.
I’m from finding the wild things,
    And a giving tree.
    I’m from animals and doctors,
    And just wanting to help.
I’m from people who love me,
And would give anything for me.

    How To Be Quiet
    Be quiet, sit down,
    Don’t make a noise,
    I’m not joking this time.
If I tell you be quiet
    That’s what I mean.
    Your grades are not perfect,
    That’s not funny to me.
    Go to your room,
I don’t want to see you.
    Why can’t you just
    Shut up and be like
    Your sister?

    Happiness
    The smell of dogs, the
Warmth of sun on skin, cold
    Fresh water, a beach sunset
    With a ferry, a puppy
    Playing, the blue of my
    Grammy’s eyes

    Two Voices
    How could you tell?!
    I confided in you.

I can take care of this by myself You can’t take care of this by yourself

You’re too young to be pregnant!
What were you thinking? What were you thinking?

I thought I could trust you with this I thought you were smarter than this!

    Drop 30 a game.
    Breakin' ankles and wettin' 3's.
    You know me.
I'm the best there can be.
    You wish you were me.
    I make them others flee.
When I be runnin' up and down the court.
But I never come up short.
Except when I'm on the bench.
    Then my team rules.
    The others leave the court.
I shot the ball it flew threw the air.
I knew my girl was there but I didn't know where.

A: I fight to see the world go on in peace and prosperity.
DA: Yet we both fight for the will of our masters.
D: You cloud the eyes with lies of a utopia that will never happen.
A: You corrupt the mind with violence and anger.
DA: Yet we both take control of a lower species that doesnt belong to us.
D: The reason I act in such a way...
A: Is because I am forced to obey...
D: To bow to his will and outstanding power...
A: Or suffer his wrath as a flaming hail shower...

  79. STILL I RISE

You may write me down in history
    With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

    Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
    Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
    With the certainty of tides,
    Just like hopes springing high,
    Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
    Bowed head and lowered eyes?
    Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
    Weakened by my soulful cries.

    Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.

    Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history's shame
    I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
    I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
    I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
    I rise
Bringing the gifts my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
    I rise
    I rise
    I rise.

    when i get anger i
    can't think straight and my
blood starts to boil, i feel
    like fire, smoke coming
out of my head wishing it
    would fly and catch the

    i know its just a
    image that will fade when
    i get angry like a

  81. Alone

    Lying, thinking
    Last night
How to find my soul a home
    Where water is not thirsty
And bread loaf is not stone
I came up with one thing
    And I don't believe I'm wrong
    That nobody,
    But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

    Alone, all alone
    Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

    There are some millionaires
    With money they can't use
Their wives run round like banshees
    Their children sing the blues
    They've got expensive doctors
To cure their hearts of stone.
    But nobody
    No, nobody
Can make it out here alone.

    Alone, all alone
    Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

    Now if you listen closely
I'll tell you what I know
    Storm clouds are gathering
    The wind is gonna blow
The race of man is suffering
And I can hear the moan,
    'Cause nobody,
    But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

    Alone, all alone
    Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

  82. When i was a child i played with
    Barbies, teady bears and imagined
    i was a queen..

when i was i was a child i use to
come home and hear my mother dancing
and grooving to Etta james, Al green
blille holliday and my dad singing
the tunes of Nat king cole.

When i was a child i use to run to
the store and grab my favorite
    fruit chews starburst and mambas

when i was a child i use to laugh
and giggle to sister , sister
    and smart guy.

when i was a child my grandfather
passed. Back then all i could
think of is wishing i could
    have said goodbye.

When i was a child my father use to
read where the wild things are and
chase me around like he was a
    monster.

when i was a child i learned that
Just living is not enough. One must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.

  83. when i was little i use to imagine i was a queen and some day i would rule the world and everybody would bow down to me.

I remember bossing my friends around and telling them what to do it makes me laugh now because i did not realize i had that much power , strength or should i say...selfishness

but as life goes on i realized that Those who do not hate their own selfishness and regard themselves as more important than the rest of the world are blind because the truth lies elsewhere.

    -Narrative Poem-
    (Tommy)
I remember when I hit my friend in the back of the head with an aluminum bat
He curled up in pain and tried to refrain from yelling mean things back

    (Alex)
He then stood up and once done shaking he charged like a mad bull and knocked me to the ground

    (Johan)
And then I was like "ouch"
And then I layed there for a while
After a while I got up
and I was like "ouch" again
    but then I was smileyface
    because I got a guitar

    How to Burn Dinner

Let's make a pizza from dinner
Put it in the oven and wait
Now the dogs needs and walk,
    go take him outside
    The living room needs vaccuming
    You spilled soda on yourself,
go take and shower and change
Clean your room and finish your homework
Pull the weeds and mow the lawn
    We're out of milk,
go to the store and buy some
Pick your sister up from her friends
    I lost my wallet,
    please go find it
Fold the laundry and put it away
    I'm hungry,
    is dinner ready?
    You burnt it?
    Wow that's dumb

    Happiness

Steam from a cup of tea.
    The smooth softness of a
    kitten's back. Fresh picked berries.
    Running through a meadow.
    A puppy playing fetch.
    Gentle breeze through my hair.
    First snow of the winter.
    Bright blue skies of summer.

    My extra poem!!!
This is the orginal version of the poem I wrote I've finalized it already if you would like to read that one some other time.

    The Lights Go Out

    The lights go out
    The world is shut off
    All advances in technology stops
Put on hold for a later date
    Now is Nature's time
    Finally she can take back
    What was always hers
Have you ever wandered into the night?
    No?
    Let her tempt you
    Into seeing the beauty
The glowing moon is brighter now
    The distant stars
    Sparkle
The gentle rustling of the leaves
The brush of wind across your cheek
    Close your eyes
    Reach out for a hand
    Feel the warmth
As though it was never there before
    Their pulse quickens
    They feel it too
Do you hear what the world whispers?
    Softly and silently
She speaks to you and me
    "Let me be wild
    Let me be free
    Let me be beauty
    That all can see
    Let me grow
    Let me spread
    Let me find peace
    Or else I'll be dead
    You may need me
    But I don't need you
    Once I'm gone
    You will be too
    So stay by my side
    Take what I give
    Return to me
    And in peace we'll live."
    Now the world goes silent
    And your heart stills
    Waiting for the words
    That will never come again
    The lights go on
    The world wakes up

I'm from hide and go seek with my best

    How to Forget Him

    Don't pick up his calls
    Don't reply tot the texts
    Delete all the pictures
    The memories aren't worth
    the tears
    He doesn't deserve you
    He doesn't deserve your sorrow
He's seeing the other girl tomorrow
How can you love someone who
kisses other lips, who double dips
    Go out with your girls
They miss you more than you think
Let him be the weakest link
    Soon you will forget
    And meet someone new
He will be the perfect guy
Turning your gray skies to blue

    Love

    The subtle scent of perfume
The feeling of two bodies embracing
    The taste of mint exchanging
Two hearts dancing in a fog of lust
Two doves together resting on the balcony
with a dark red blanket lying
    over the guardrail; love

    Narrative Poem

When I was small I played barbies all day
Jen wanted to play too but her barbies weren't cool
Ken and Barbie partied together all the time
Then Kelly came along and the party came to an end
Six in the morning I'm waking and eating bacon
I burn my plastic dolls in the basement
    Don't know my placement
So I am sitting with myself
Eating chips and ice cream and getting fat
    I saw a baseball bat
So I got up to finally do something but
I was heart broke as a young folk
    I love riding his bus
    I barely cuss

We'll have fun, laugh, play and read about country folk
But when the day is done you wont have as much fun until the next day when you come back to play
When you return we will begin to write and your world will begin to light

    How To...

    Get off the floor
    Run to the baseline
    Pick it up
    On my whistle

    Watch Ray Allen
    Start from legs and up
    Follow through on your shot
    That was too short

    Left, right, between the legs
Hits your leg, rolls of, go get it
It's muscle memory, now do it over and over

    Hit the weights
    Add every week
    Push yourself
While your resting someone else is working at it

    Extended Metaphor

    Scent of uncooked chicken
    Stomach aches and numbness
    Dry and sour in mouth
    Person in dark corner
    Turtle hiding in shell
    Dark gray clouds hovering

    Narrative Poem

I remember when I was in elementary school
Edmonds Woodway Elemetary was where I spent my days
    Jokes in class, recess outside
Going as fast as I could on tire swings
    Always having enough sleep
    Things were simple back then

Life in elementary school was like a bundle of joy
    never had a worry
Playing soccer with all the other kids
It happened in such a hurry
Getting timeouts for something I did wrong
    My many memories moving by

I was so young, thinking pigs could fly
I used my imagination so much then
My basketball was my best friend
We would play in the hot sun or wet playground
Watching NBA thinking someday I'll get there
We kids could dream for days

I remember how nice my bed was to me
Now all I hear now is Ehh! Ehh!
My alarm clock forcing me out of bed
    Getting ready for high school
    Earlier time and longer hours
Maybe we should have enjoyed being young

  101. How to Forget

All you want to do is sit around and mope,
when you should be standing tall and being happy.
When I need to forget is when I want to hold on forever.
What you do first is hang out with friends as much as you can.
when you feel blue, think of something to do.
Don't try at look at the good stuff in the beginning, because it's the end.
Now it's not the same anymore.
Burn your past, and look forward.
    There's always someone else,
don't get stuvk with someone not worth your time.
    Be mature about it.
Now the last thing and the most important thing is you just wait and...
    thats how you forget.

    Dont talk with food
    in your mouth.Take

    with who and where?
    If you lie you know
    I'll find out. Your
    16 now, we dont
    need you to turn
    out like your sisters.
    Running away, arrested,
    rehab.Pull yourself
    together and prove yourself
    wrong,your not like them.
    No mistakes means no regrets.
    Your father and I dont
    want another grandchild.
    Your going to mess up
    your life like them.
    Now sit up straight,
    dont interupt me,
    go do something productive.
Dont just sit there and let
    this happen to you. There
    expecting you to turnout
    like them.A trainwreck.

    Where I'm From

    Im from Hotwheels and barbies
    Im from fighting with my

    Im from chocolate covered
    gummy bears and poprocks.
    Im from staying up past
    my bedtime watching re-runs
    of Buffy the Vampire slayer.

the boys. Im from the family
    on the outside seemed ordinary

but really, there whole world was
    crumbling.

    Extended Metaphor- Hapiness

    The feeling of going on
    a summer vacation.The
    smell of fresh cotton
    candy at the fair. The
    adrenaline rush just
    like at an amusement park.
    A dog chacing its ball
    through the yard. Yellow,
like the sun in the dead
    middle of summer.

    Where im from-
Im from barbies and gameboy colors.
    im from volleyball and soccer.
Pop was what i listened to, Britney Spears.
I would down bags of reeses cups.
Arthur and Zoom were on my tv.
Obama, the first African American president was epic.
Green eggs and ham was repeatedly read.
Being a teacher when i was older sounded cool!
Toughest thing to happy, parents divorcing.

    How to-Stay positive
You gotta keep your head up
    even if your fed up.
    Dont ever get stressed
    because you are the best.
Through the thick and the thin
    the ups and the downs
you keep a smile on your face
    Never a frown.
And the girls youve been through
all the shit that you've seen
there wont ever be a problem
    to hard or too mean.

    Extended metaphore-Depression
    Rain pouring down onto
    the earth. Goosebumps creeping
    up cold skin. Sour and
    salty tears falling down
    top layer of cheek. Drowning
    in deep ocean of tears.
    Turancula crawling
    through rainforest of black.
    Darkness.

Poetry Research-Like the touch of rain by edward thomas.
Like the touch of rain she was
on a mans flesh hair and eyes
When the joy of walking thus
    has taken him by surprise;

When the love of the storm burns
he sings, he laughs, well i know how,
    but forget when he returns
as shall not forget her "go now"

Those two words shut a door
between me and the blessed rain
    that was never shut before
    and will not open again.

    Narrative poem-Wearable
I remember how tight you were
how you wrapped around my legs
    your holes were so small
Opening and closing you, zip zip
when you were inside you were wet drip drip
so easy to turn you on so hard to turn you off
when i pull you out your so dry and soft
when i use you to much you dont fit
so i throw you back in, click click
mom comes in screaming what are you doing
    your jeans are done drying
    who are you fooling

    Poem in two voices-
Stop it! ~ you never loved me its over
no its not your a part of me
you hold my hearth ~you hold my heart
    youve said that to every
    other girl
no i havent! ~ i dont want to hear it anymore
    theres the door leave
    even when i leave i'll
    still think of you, and

  105. Where I’m from…
I’m from soccer balls and video games, from coloring my nights away. I’m from tag and hide and seek from lava monster to soccer games, I’m from Britney spears and the backstreet boys to panic at the disco and ne-yo of course, I’m from sour patch kids to skittles and Hershey’s chocolate, I’m from that’s so raven and hey Arnold from SpongeBob to pimp my car, I’m from the first black president to nine eleven to the earthquake in 2001, I’m from the boxcar children to the rainbow fish from Goosebumps and the scary pages, I’m from dreams of getting paid for my game from moving all over the place

    Depression
Unwashed clothes and dirty body in a dark cave filled with bats, knives stabbing you at every turn, the taste of something raw, lions feeding on me like I’m a tasty zebra, like black ink spreading all over my skin

    Narrative Poem
I come from a long line of beans and corn, I’m related to the pinto bean and the corn tortilla, my mom is a red bean and my dad is a black bean, my brother is a brown bean and he has a lot of black eyed peas
The black bean was like dark coffee from starbucks, the red bean was like a rose color, the brown bean is like a tree trunk
Beans are a magical fruit, beans are a different sort, and beans are good for you, beans laughing at each other
    BANG!
    Why Must You Be Unfaithful
    Men!
You shouldn’t listen to your selfish heart
It doesn’t really have a brain
    Besides keeping you alive
    Its existence is in vain
“How could I be so mean?
And say your heart has no place”
Because mortal men fall in love again
As fast as they change their face
I may be cruel, but think awhile about
The hearts that you have broken
Match that with the empty vows
    And broken promises you’ve spoken
I am not saying females are perfect
Because men we know it’s not true
But why must you be unfaithful
If her heart is true to you!!!
